Sports Nutritionist London

Matt began his interest in sports at an early age starting Karate at 12. These interests led to a life-time obsession with all things training, nutritional and health related.

After gaining his instructors qualification in Karate, he went onto coach fitness at his local amateur boxing club.
After completing a degree in Political Philosophy at Bristol, Matt couldn’t keep away from the health and fitness arena and qualified as a personal trainer; eventually running his own company in the City. This led to developing his other passion: nutrition. Matt undertook a further three years of study at the Institute of Optimum Nutrition.
He went on to spend time on Harley Street, specializing in elite sports, female hormonal health and body composition management.
The contacts he made through this work led to a spell, working as nutritionist with Millwall football club during which time they made the play-off for the Premiership and also qualified for the FA cup final.
In 2002 Matt started working with the England Rugby Team and was part of Clive Woodward’s team that lifted the World Cup in 2003. He continues in the same role working with the England team and was a member of the team who against all the odds reached the final of the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Matt’s past and present clients as Sports Nutritionist include London Wasps, London Irish, Saracens and Leicester Rugby Clubs.
Matt currently runs his own elite performance based company. This is aimed at elite athletes and corporations and includes all levels of health related performance. He has written the popular Fat Loss Program Four Week Fat Loss and Regenerate a muscle building anabolic program.

Hi Matt,
I am currently in my second year of a Nutrition degree and looking into going into the field of Sports Nutrition when I graduate next year. Before my third year commences I am required to carry out a 20 day (120 hour) voluntary placement in a nutritional area of my choice. After reading your profile and experiences I am very much interested in your company, and wondering if you offer any opportunities for placements? Or alternatively, could you provide me with any information about the ways in which you were able to undertake your nutritional work experience? (i.e. through football clubs) Any help would be greatly appreciated and I would love to have the opportunity to work with you. Many thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Matt,
I’m a student at university at the moment and I’m very serious about getting in better shape for playing football and for my general life. At the moment I consider myself in good shape but am really struggling to lose a degree of fat that is still on me while at the same time developing the muscle to benefit my sporting life. I’ve altered my diet to be centred around high-protein meals and have ensured the only major carbohydrates I’m eating are weetabix in the morning along with brown past or rice for lunch. Alongside this I’ve cut out all sweets and chocolates from my diet but am still struggling to develop the tone and musculature I want, especially around my core. I was looking to book an appointment with you as I know the key to removing this excess body fat lies in nutrition.
Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon,
Scott Prior

Hi Matt,
I was hoping to contact you directly but couldn’t find your email address?
Was hoping you might be interested in recording a guest lecture on sports nutrition for St Mary’s MSc in Strength & Conditioning? There is also a lot of interest from other coaches in a small group seminar if you still run this kind of thing?
Please let me know.
Thank you
Matt
Hi Matt,
I am looking to become a sports nutritionist by doing a degree in nutrition followed by a masters in sports nutrition. I am currently doing A-levels.
For my food nutrition coursework i am designing a post-match meal for footballers and would really appreciate some ideas for my research. It would be great to be able to include your expert opinion for my coursework.
Many thanks
Josh
Hi Matt would it be possible for you to send me an email directly. I have something i would like to share with you. Someone who knows you gave me an email addresss but the email got bounced back. Regards
Dear Matt,
I am hoping for some advice. My son is an under 15′s academy footballer. He trains six days a week at present, both with the club and a personal trainer.
I am concerned he has recently started having drenching night sweats which frequently wake him.
I am arranging a GP appointment to exclude any systemic/viral causes, however I am also aware of this as a possible symptom of overtraining.
I have read (and partially understood!) your article on overtraining and adrenal fatigue and would be grateful for any advice on nutritional support for him.
Please email me regarding your availability for consultations.
Many Thanks
Penny
Hi Matt,
I’m currently a student beginning my second year at York St John University studying a degree in Sports Science and Injury Management. As part of my degree programme I must complete a placement oppurtunity and i have been keen on the idea of nutrition for a while now.
Do you have any tips or ideas for finding potential work placement providers?
Thanks
Hi Matt
Sorry if you have already been asked this previously, but I am about to be made redundant from my current Marketing job and I’m toying with the idea of a complete change in career. I have a keen interest in fitness as I go to the gym and gym classes most days. I also have a keen interest in nutrition with healthy eating and ensuring I have nutritious smoothies and juices to help fuel and recovery of my fitness routine.
I have a real interest in fitness and nutrition, but no previous experience or qualifications. I was hoping to re-train to become a Sports Nutritionist able to work with local gyms, sports clubs, individuals etc. I live on the Isle of Man so any course I do needs to be by distance learning as I don’t have access to any University / study centre. I was looking at this course and wondered what your thoughts were on signing up for this course to give me the knowledge and qualifications needed to change my career: http://www.futurefit.co.uk/courses/become-a-nutrition-specialist/nutrition-specialist-diploma/
If you don’t think this is suitable, are you able to recommend any other course?
Thank you for your time in reading this and I await your reply.
many thanks

Look forward to hearing from you,
Joelle

Hello Matt,
Hoping against hope you may be able to help.
Im writing on behalf of my daughter who is 19 and attends a dance college. Over the past 10 months she has put on 2 stone in weight along with acne, excema and hair some hair loss. She is hardly eating anything at all and what she is eating is wholegrain fruit and vegetables. She takes a supplement of Omega 3. She has been tested for Thyroid disfunction and PCOS and both have come back normal. While she was home for Easter we did the juice diet to see if that could kick start some weight loss – I lost 8lbs in 9 days -n she lost 0lbs!! We are now at a loss on which way to turn as the Gp has not been any help. She is now at the point where she thinks her career in dance and musical theatre will be ended.
Any thoughts Matt would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Hi Matt,
I’m producing a Football TV series for Disney and I’d really like to include you in it. I’d like you to be on camera with the three children undertaking the “Football Academy” challenges as our resident Sports Nutruitionist. I realise you’re a busy man but this would only require an hour or so of your time, some time during the week beginning Monday 27th Feb 2012. I think you’d be a great addition to the series and it would provide the chance to educate large numbers of kids about the importance of good nutrition to sporting performance. Please drop me an email to let me know if you’re interested.
Best wishes,
James Reilly

hi matt,
Im 16 and playing 1XV rugby (u18) at my school. The season has just finished but for next season i would just like some advice on building muscle and getting bigger to deal with the physicality, look more threatening etc. I am about 6’1 weighing about 80kg now and a back row so some advice on getting bigger could be very handy. I just want to know if i should be using protein shakes after gym session or throughout the day, if so which shake is the best? If not then what could help me to get bigger without supplements. I have diet advice etc but i want my gym sessions to be more effective and to come back in the new year, looking bigger and stronger to help with my rugby!
hi mate – send me your CV please matt@performandfunction.co.uk
Hi Matt,

Hi Matt,
I haven’t been training for a while, and i have come back to the website to get the regenerate programme that i previously purchased, but when i click on the regenerate tab, it asks me to subscribe and purchase the programme again.
Would you be able to tell me how i can access the different phases without it asking me to purchase the programme again?
Thanks
Frazer
Hi Matt.
I am currently trying to lower my body fat and at present feel that I could perhaps benefit from a couple of pointers. I am 21yrs old, 6ft 3 and weigh around 93Kgs.
At present I am doing 25K on an excercise bike everymorning burning around 600 cals, I do this on an empty stomach and after always having a black coffee. I work pretty hard and normally its takes me around 37-40minutes.
For the remainder of the day I avoid carbohydratres (only getting them from Veg, super foods etc) and try to eat 5-6 small meals a day. Here’s a typical day nutrition wise.
Morning – Bluberry Smoothie (good handful with Ice) + 1 scoop of Kinectica Whey (Post cycle) and Green Tea
Mid morning – Handful of mixed nuts and Pint of water
Lunch – 2 Chicken breasts/Thighs, avocado and Salad with tomatoes and cucumber and Green Tea
Afternoon – 150g 0% greek yogurt mixed in with 1 scoop of Kinectica Whey and small handful of nuts and blueberries and Green Tea
Dinner – 2 Chicken breasts stirfry/ Steak and spinach
Before bed – 100-150g Cottage cheese and Green Tea
I am well disciplined and do follow this most days, and normally incorportate one cheat meal once a week (similar to how you explained on the four week fat loss) on friday evening of normally Ice cream or chocolate in one sitting.
What are your thoughts generally? Are there areas which should be ammended drastically?
Many thanks and any help would be appreciated,
Jack
Matt
very interesting comments – our 16 year old daughter is 16 years old and is very serious about her rugby London & South East plus other representative teams
she is 5’6″ and is approx 50g
we are concerned at her lack of weight playing such a physical sport. She has just joined the U18 age group and she will come up against a mismatch in size
can we book a consultation with you in August to seek your advice – she is at tyhe age when any comment from her parents falls on deaf ears
many thanks
Paul Carter
Hi Pam,
we can help him.
are you free this Friday morning? we’re based near Old Street London.
Hi Matt
My 22 year old son is currently in training to run 10 marathons in 12 days (he’s running from Paris to London) to raise money for The Royal Marsden Hospital in London where his Dad is currently being treated for a brain tumour.
He is a good runner but really has no idea (and neither have the rest of us) about how to structure his diet to ensure that he can keep going over such a long period.
I don’t suppose you know of anybody that we can talk to about putting together a diet plan for him during his training and throughout the run.
Sorry I appreciate that your area of specialism is Rugby but would appreciate a pointer in the right direction. He starts his run on 3rd August so time is tight!
Thanks for any insights you can give.
Pam Potter
Hi Matt,
I am coming to the end of my Sports Nutrition MSc at Loughborough University and I wondered whether you could offer any intern positions (or job opportunities)?
I have been working with the West Midlands Regional Triathlon Academy but would love to progress to working with elite senior athletes and also working in the health sector,
Please let me know if you can help,
Many thanks,

Hi Matt,

Hi Matt
I have just finished my first year studying for a degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition at Sheffield Hallam University. I hope to further my studies at the end of my course to move into sports nutrition as I am a keen rugby player and the opportunity to work in sports nutrition is my dream end goal.
In the third year of my course I have a year working and I was hoping for some guidance in the best places to contact for a years placement/intermship starting from June/July 2012; whether that be with yourself or somewhere else
Thanks, Adam
