Matt Lovell

Sports Nutritionist London

Matt began his interest in sports at an early age starting Karate at 12. These interests led to a life-time obsession with all things training, nutritional and health related.

Matt Lovell - Elite Sports Nutritionist

After gaining his instructors qualification in Karate, he went onto coach fitness at his local amateur boxing club.

After completing a degree in Political Philosophy at Bristol, Matt couldn’t keep away from the health and fitness arena and qualified as a personal trainer; eventually running his own company in the City. This led to developing his other passion: nutrition. Matt undertook a further three years of study at the Institute of Optimum Nutrition.

He went on to spend time on Harley Street, specializing in elite sports, female hormonal health and body composition management.

The contacts he made through this work led to a spell, working as nutritionist with Millwall football club during which time they made the play-off for the Premiership and also qualified for the FA cup final.

In 2002 Matt started working with the England Rugby Team and was part of Clive Woodward’s team that lifted the World Cup in 2003. He continues in the same role working with the England team and was a member of the team who against all the odds reached the final of the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Matt’s past and present clients  as Sports Nutritionist include London Wasps, London Irish, Saracens and Leicester Rugby Clubs.

Matt currently runs his own elite performance based company. This is aimed at elite athletes and corporations and includes all levels of health related performance. He has written the popular Fat Loss Program Four Week Fat Loss and Regenerate a muscle building anabolic program.

Sports Nutritionist London

Matt lives in London and as his schedule is available for nutritional consultations in London.

My 16 year old son is seriously into Martial Arts and would like more body mass to help him in competitions and he is very interested in your muscle building program. I am concerned about the effect of the supplements on his still developing body. Could you please comment on the safety of this program for teenager.
Thank you,
Bev MacDonald

The key to whether the supplements are suitable for a teenager lies in his biological age. If he’s mature then there would be no reason not to support him on a system like the one I’ve developed.

If he’s still growing then he’d do better on an abbreviated version of the system. The key thing also is this system offers a healthy and comparative alternative to steroid use which lure so many teens.

Hope that helps.

Hi Matt,
I’m an Ironman Triathlete, and whilst trying to drop 14lbs,currently im 15’8 and maintain 15hrs training per week im really finding it hard to balance the correct amount of food, to sustain my training, do you have any ideas how i should go about this?
Thanks
Kev

4

Hi Kev,

It’s often the case that even with a massive amount of cardio based intensive training body fat can still be an issue.

Without going into detail (which you might need) I suggest you treat some of your sessions as pure fat burners. I.e. only eat protein before hand and then put the carbs in afterwards.

Drop starch out of your evening meal as well. Make sure you take half your body weight in sugars directly after 90 mins of training, with protein.

Also you may need to up your protein intake generally.

You could also read the carbohydrate cycling document in the members area.

All best

Hi Matt,
thanks for the quick reply, how do i go about getting the detailed plan from you? as i have the World firefighters long course champoinships and need to get my diet requirments sorted out asap
Kev

6

Hi mate,

We should arrange a consultation in that case – whereabouts are you based?

7

Hi Matt, I’m based in Banbury Oxfordshire, i will call you this-morning. Thanks
Kev

Hi Matt

Basically looking for some long term consultation which may be of interest to you. Over the next year and a half I’m training for a 5 month Kayaking expedition to the Arctic. The problem lies with being epileptic, not sever, but enough to get constant drop in energy levels under continues extreme physical and mental exercise. Recently paddled the south coast of Britain, but encountered several problems, drop in energy levels, lose of coordination, balance when paddling.
Over the next year and a half I will put myself through some extensive training, but need to closely examine my diet and its relationship with my illness. Studies towards epilepsy and diet a scarce. Would you or any contacts be interested in such a long term project.
Training needs to consists of prolonged periods of exercise, Eg. 24 hour bike rides, as some crossings are 3 days and 3 nights.
Cheers

Vaughan

Hi Matt,

I’m doing a project at college based on sports nutrition and wanted to ask you a few questions,

- Why do you think that athletes resort to supplements, and do you think that they are good for the body?
- Do you think that an athlete could get exactly the same nutrition from eating properly rather than taking supplements as well?

Thanks Amy

Matt,

I am in my 2nd year of a Sports Science Course at Leeds Carnegie college and as part of my studies I need to undertake 2 weeks of work experience early in 2010.
As my preferred area of the course is nutrition I would dearly love to spend the 2 weeks working in the field of Sports Nutrition and as you are one of the top Nutritionists in the country I wondered if you would consider allowing me to spend this time shadowing you.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Regards

Matthew Jones

Hi Matt,

thanks for the offer – we may be able to see you, I have an intern already. But next year there may be a space.

We do internships but these are chargable learning experiences. Maybe for someone who has more experience, although good for anyone who loves nutrition and wants to learn more.

these include – ‘shadowing’ as you mentioned, a full personal analysis – you learn from the process, an introduction to our methods of analysis – hormonal profiling and interventions, various protocol training, immune, injury, fat loss, anabolic, and other health issues. Training on elite supplementation protocols – safe supplementation and then a certificate at the end of it all.

Hi Matt,
Hope you are good. My name is Suzie Ball and I’m a magazine journalist and I’m just writing a feature for Cycling Plus magazine (it’s actually for a job at the magazine).

The feature is on the recent research news that 500ml of organic beetroot juice can increase athletes- of any ability- stamina by up to 16 per cent (I’m sure you know all about it).

I would love to ask your expert opinion on what snack/meal a cyclist could combine the beetroot juice with (I have suggested a smoothie to make it more palatable) to have maximum impact for their fitness and health?

(I realise there would be lots and lots of combinations you could suggest so if you could give just one example that would be great.)

I appreciate you are very busy but I’m on a very tight deadline so I would really appreciate it if you would be able to get back to me shortly.

Many thanks indeed Matt.

Kind regards,
Suzie

13

Hi Matt,
Thanks so much for your response- please see your emails for one last request. Once again, thank you.

Suzie

Hi Matt,

I’m interested in your 4 week fat loss plan as a keen cyclist, however as a Paramedic I work shifts. Will this cause a problem with your plan as you mention there are right times to eat and I can’t always eat when I should due to the nature of the work?

19

hi,

you are doing some great work then – I’ve always admired poeple who do your job.

shift wise you can still make progress – i’d have to adapt the format a bit to suit your needs which I can do if you send me your shift pattern.

It’ll be a bit harder for you but you’ll get results.

Matt

20

Thanks for your prompt reply how would the process work? Would I need a personal conultation or purchase the 4WFL programme? Then email you directly with my shift rota?

Thanks Gareth

21

Matt,

Not sure if you got my last email.

I am trying find a pre and post workout protein supplement.

I am riding into work and need some fuel for the 35 minute ride. Once I get in to work I then hit the gym for an hour.

Do I do a pre workout shake at home – Bike – Workout (60mins) and post workout shake?

Your thoughts on this ?

What and where should I buy the product?

Many thanks

Malcolm

22

hi Malcolm,

sorry no I didnt get the last email –

I would use a pre workout drink like citramax by maximuscle or max exceed by myprotein. I would add some tyrosine to this around 5 grams.

Post workout depending on your goals I would use either a whey protein shake – or a recovery drink. 100% recovery by kinetica is good – we can supply this – or recovermax by maximuslce. I’m also a big fan of aminos pre and post workout – I’ve got some here – these are more expensive than the other options but very effective.

Hope this helps.

P.S we’ll be supplying all these items very soon via our shop

Matt Hi

My son is 15 in December and playing back row for Gloucestershire county cup winners of the last 3 years and has been selected for the Staffordshire County side this season Tom has rugby in his blood and I believe has many of the other skills he would need to play at the highest level, fitness, drive, determination, passion etc.

I want to encourage the right physical development and need some advice

Thanks Keith

24

Hi Matt,

Im a 25yr old Ironman athlete training around 20+hrs a week…Ive always been a big guy but in the last couple years have started to changed a lot and my bf has and is coming down gradually. I completely agree on the fat burn training i.e. on thursdays i do a 3hr ride or 20km run in morn on no nutrition… Seems to be working well!! Id love to arrange a consultation sometime though to discuss my diet and race strategies more… Im hoping to break the 24hr indoor watt bike world record in dec so need some help on that as well!

Thanks
Tom

25

Hi Matt,

Please could you tell me what the single most important nutritional strategy is to speed recovery of a muscle tear.
David

26

Phase 4 of the anabolic plan give you injury repair strategies, there’s not a simple answer;

you’ve got to eat according to out principles
you need alot of vitamin C, and aminos for collagen – look up collagen and nutrients and see what you get.

I would use high dose arginine, vitamin C and (cissus – if you are not drug tested) – watch for digestive problems then you knwo you are taking too much

27

Hi Matt, how are you? Don't know where you're living these days. I'm still up in Norfolk, living in Dickleburgh with Nesli and our 2 sons – Kemal and Tahsin. Meanwhile Daniel is doing his GCSE's! Anyway it would be nice to catch up sometime, if you're able. Seems like you've found your feet and are doing really well – great news!! Anyway all the Best. Will.

28

Hi Matt,
I wonder if you can be of some assistance? I am a qualified and registered Nutritionist currently working with the nutritional analysis of school meals. Whilst i am enjoying my job, essentially my goal is to become a sports/performance nutritionist as it is where my main interests lie. I do have a background in sport as i used to swim and run competitively, however i am finding it extremely difficult to get my 'foot in the door' within the field of sports nutrition. It is of great importance to me that i get involved in sports nutrition as it is my life long passion.
I was just wondering if you had any advise for me, as to what will help me get into this career path as i am finding that sports/performance nutrtionist jobs are very few and far between!! I would be so grateful if you know of any people/organisations who i could get in contact with? Or simply any information surrounding your area of work that may point me down the same career path?
If you could reply to sarahkelway15@hotmail.com i would be very grateful
Thank you very much
Sarah Kelway

Hi matt
I hold a Masters Degree in Nutrition, from a renowned University from India. I would like to take up my career as Sports Nutritionist in London as i might be moving there soon. Can you please help me with it, as in how to apply for it. Also i would like to know whether this degree is sufficient or should i need to do some other course to take up job there. Please Help. Thanks

30

Hello Matt,
I am coming to the end of my BSc (Hons) Sports Studies degree (3 exams left!) at the University of Essex, Southend.  As my passion is sports nutrition, and my dissertation looked at the effects of GI foods on concentration levels, I would love to get into the industry and work as a sports nutritionist to either the public or elite athletes.

Now as one of the countries top sports nutritionists, I would very much appreciate any advice you could give as to where to get some experience, to get me on the right path to achieving my goal.  I'm also looking to take on the "nutrition specialist diploma" from future fit, the nutrition society has endorsed this course, and as my degree isn't specifically geared toward just nutrition, (although featured a sports nutriton module of which I achieved a 1st classification) may help me in my career.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I look forward to your reply!
Jon Morrison

31

Hi Jon
RE  the proposed training course you are thinking of doing can you post the exact link.  Ihad a quick look on the future fit site and it did not give tha much information a course was mentioned that was an 8 weeks home study course.

If it is a UK Course it needs to be accreditied to at least REPS level 3 and preferrably 4.
I have got the CISSN certificate from the International Institute of Sports Nutrition you may want to look at that.

32

Hi Matt, I'm currently studying Biomedical Sciences in University of Southampton. I chose this course before I became interested in rugby related sports training and sports nutrition. I'm now looking into the possibility of taking a postgraduate course in Nutrition/ Dietetics in the hope to one day become a Sports Nutritionist.
I was hoping you could recommend courses, or give me some guidance on which associations these courses should be approved by, for me to progress further on my career path. I’ve been looking at some masters courses in Dietetics, Public Nutrition, Human Nutrition and specific sports nutrition courses in Loughborough and UWIC, but have also found some diplomas online. My fear of choosing a specific sports nutrition course is that it presumably closes many doors (in the public health sector) if I then find there are limited jobs in the sports nutrition field… E.g. I heard 1 sports nutritionist is employed for all four of the Welsh rugby regions!
Any advice would be a great help.
Regards
Oliver West

Hi Matt

Im currently studying Sport and Exercise Science and im in my second year! as part of my course i have to attend a placement!I am really interested in sport nutrition and i was wondering if you could offer me any advice on placements?
Many thanks

34

Hi Matt

I have studied sport for a large proportion of my life and am currently playing semi professional rugby. I have decided to continue my passion for sport by going to university and I am currently looking at nutrition as a future career path. However, I cannot distinguish whether to study sport nutrition or simply nutrition as I do not want to specify at this stage.

So my question to you is… Would studying nutrition put me at a disadvantage should further down the line I choose to go specifically down the sport nutritionalist route? Would there be huge differences between the two types of courses?

Your help and advice would be greatly appreciated
Many thanks
Kyle

35

Hi

I would look to study nutrition generally and then specialise in sports.

the reason is that soprts poeple need health based nutrition and other help – not just performance based. e.g. adrenal fatigue – etc are common problems for athletes.

Ask BANT for a list of decent courses and degrees – also consider the IOC diploma – for industry standard approaches.

36

Hi Matt

I’m a 14 year old kid that weighs 50kgs and measures 1,60m i’m a rugby winger, and i’m just looking for a simple supplement that helps me be having a bit more muscle.

Sorry for my english but i’m portuguese

Thanks a lot!

Diogo

37

Hi buddy. The best thing you can do is aim to eat a solid diet 1st. Then think about a supplement afterwards. Increase all vegetables, fruits, dairy, fish, meats, nuts and seeds (raw) we have a guide called sports nutrition essentials have a read of that it’ll point you in right direction. We also have a kids nutrition guide we’ll put the main points on there for you to check. Make sure you check with you parents about supplementation. Don’t be put of doing weights with good technique. Starting now will stand you in good stead for the future. Good luck. Matt

38

Hi Matt

I would like to know if there is any website where i can find healthy recipes.

Thanks

Diogo

39

Hi Matt,

I desperately wanted to ask, there was a 5 meal a day work out plan you had created for one of the mens health magazine issues (i think it was arill 2009). I unfortunately have misplaced it, and wanted to ask where i can get another copy?

Many thanks

There is nowhere I can see as to weather these products contain animal or fish products. Can you help?

Dear Matt,

I’m currently a second year student at the University of Surrey studying a Bsc in Nutrition. My third year requires me to undertake a placement, (July 2011 – June 2012) and I am very interested in having the opportunity to spend my third year with you. I would like to use my degree in unison with my other personal strengths and experience to work in the sporting field. I have a strong background in sport. Since a youngster I have enjoyed participating in a variety of different areas of sport, including rugby which I fully support, karate, for which I am a Black Belt, athletics, particularly hurdling, swimming, badminton, and x-country. I have trained and competed at many levels from, school and club level to city and county representation. I represented the county at the Welsh Championships narrowly missing out on National representation. My interest has continued into my further education and I am now the president of the running and athletics club at the university.
Following my degree and using my passion for sport I aim to work with sporting athletes and their nutrition requirements. Gaining an insight into this and learning from practical experience is something that I hope you can offer me. Work experience with you would be a great springboard to my career and I’m sure a memorable learning experience.
Please could you send me some information or point me in the right direction to enable me to apply for a work placement with you. I have a current CV should you wish to have a copy.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

To whom it may concern,

My name is Emily Hayday and I am currently an undergraduate in my first year of a Sports Studies (BSc) degree; specialising in Sport Science at the University of Southampton.
I am an enthusiastic and committed student and I am enjoying the challenges and increased knowledge that this course brings.

I would be really interested in carrying out some work experience and I hope that there is an opportunity within your club/organisation. I have three months off for summer, so I am looking to gain experience for any length of time that is possible. I am a quick learner and would be grateful for any opportunities you could offer.

Thanks for your time,

and hope to hear from you soon

Emily Hayday.

Hi Matt

I am a massage therapist and one of my clients is looking for a sports nutritionist in Aberdeen who would be able to help him get back on track with his judo.

Hi

My son is a 14year old rugby player – he is playing rugby to a high level, at one of the best schools in the country, he has a sports scholarship. He is also in a county Elite squad, linked to academies. He is 6’1″ and 81.1kg, he would like to start using supplements to improve his muscle growth and enhance his performance. He is has a naturally athletic build. We would appreciate your advice on what supplements if any you would recommend.

Thank you.

Please read it and consider about our offer.

Thank you,

Dear Mr. Lovell,

I am of english nationality but since the age of 4 have been living in Portugal.
I am currently in my final year at university, having studied Diet & Nutrition. Although i enjoy the clinical side of nutrition and find it very rewarding i am very interested in sport nutrition, as i have always been a very sporty person. As part of our final year we have to do two placements, I am now currently in my second placement, which i’m doing with a semi professional football team.
After completing my finl year i am planning on returning to the UK to further my education in sport nutrition. I would therefore appreciate it if you could recommend the best degree/ instituition/ courses i could apply for. I appreciate you are very busy and have lots enquireies of but over the past few months i have e-mailed several places and i either don’t get a reply or if I do it’s not very helpful.

Thank you very much for your time!
Regards
Nicola Morgan

49

Dear Mr. Lovell,

I am currently completing the 2nd year of the IOC diploma in Sports Nutrition. I read in an earlier comment that you provide work experience opportunities as well as an internship placement. I feel I have gained a good theoretical basis in sport nutrition during my time on the IOC course. I am now looking to develop practical skills that are needed to successfully monitor and establish nutritional plans. Your elite performance based company and expertise would be an ideal next step for my training as a Sports Nutritionist. I realise this must be a competitive placement and if there are opportunities available I can email you my CV and a covering letter. I look forward to hearing from you,

Kind Regards,

Hi Matt

I have just finished my first year studying for a degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition at Sheffield Hallam University. I hope to further my studies at the end of my course to move into sports nutrition as I am a keen rugby player and the opportunity to work in sports nutrition is my dream end goal.

In the third year of my course I have a year working and I was hoping for some guidance in the best places to contact for a years placement/intermship starting from June/July 2012; whether that be with yourself or somewhere else

Thanks, Adam

Hi Matt,

I’m a 21 year old rugby player who has had 4 serious surgeries in 4 seasons… I am desperate to get back playing and to be at my physical peak when doing so. I am very keen to book a consultation with you and gain your insight and help over 6 months. What is the best way to go about this?

Kind regards,

55

Hi Matt,

I am coming to the end of my Sports Nutrition MSc at Loughborough University and I wondered whether you could offer any intern positions (or job opportunities)?

I have been working with the West Midlands Regional Triathlon Academy but would love to progress to working with elite senior athletes and also working in the health sector,

Please let me know if you can help,

Many thanks,

56

Hi Matt

My 22 year old son is currently in training to run 10 marathons in 12 days (he’s running from Paris to London) to raise money for The Royal Marsden Hospital in London where his Dad is currently being treated for a brain tumour.

He is a good runner but really has no idea (and neither have the rest of us) about how to structure his diet to ensure that he can keep going over such a long period.

I don’t suppose you know of anybody that we can talk to about putting together a diet plan for him during his training and throughout the run.

Sorry I appreciate that your area of specialism is Rugby but would appreciate a pointer in the right direction. He starts his run on 3rd August so time is tight!

Thanks for any insights you can give.

Pam Potter

57

Hi Pam,

we can help him.

are you free this Friday morning? we’re based near Old Street London.

58

Matt

very interesting comments – our 16 year old daughter is 16 years old and is very serious about her rugby London & South East plus other representative teams
she is 5’6″ and is approx 50g
we are concerned at her lack of weight playing such a physical sport. She has just joined the U18 age group and she will come up against a mismatch in size
can we book a consultation with you in August to seek your advice – she is at tyhe age when any comment from her parents falls on deaf ears

many thanks

Paul Carter

59

Hi Matt.

I am currently trying to lower my body fat and at present feel that I could perhaps benefit from a couple of pointers. I am 21yrs old, 6ft 3 and weigh around 93Kgs.

At present I am doing 25K on an excercise bike everymorning burning around 600 cals, I do this on an empty stomach and after always having a black coffee. I work pretty hard and normally its takes me around 37-40minutes.

For the remainder of the day I avoid carbohydratres (only getting them from Veg, super foods etc) and try to eat 5-6 small meals a day. Here’s a typical day nutrition wise.

Morning – Bluberry Smoothie (good handful with Ice) + 1 scoop of Kinectica Whey (Post cycle) and Green Tea

Mid morning – Handful of mixed nuts and Pint of water

Lunch – 2 Chicken breasts/Thighs, avocado and Salad with tomatoes and cucumber and Green Tea

Afternoon – 150g 0% greek yogurt mixed in with 1 scoop of Kinectica Whey and small handful of nuts and blueberries and Green Tea

Dinner – 2 Chicken breasts stirfry/ Steak and spinach

Before bed – 100-150g Cottage cheese and Green Tea

I am well disciplined and do follow this most days, and normally incorportate one cheat meal once a week (similar to how you explained on the four week fat loss) on friday evening of normally Ice cream or chocolate in one sitting.

What are your thoughts generally? Are there areas which should be ammended drastically?

Many thanks and any help would be appreciated,

Jack

Hi Matt,

I haven’t been training for a while, and i have come back to the website to get the regenerate programme that i previously purchased, but when i click on the regenerate tab, it asks me to subscribe and purchase the programme again.

Would you be able to tell me how i can access the different phases without it asking me to purchase the programme again?

Thanks

Frazer

Frazer, you can login here http://www.regeneratenutrition.com/wp-login.php

I have also sent you an email.

64

hi matt,
Im 16 and playing 1XV rugby (u18) at my school. The season has just finished but for next season i would just like some advice on building muscle and getting bigger to deal with the physicality, look more threatening etc. I am about 6’1 weighing about 80kg now and a back row so some advice on getting bigger could be very handy. I just want to know if i should be using protein shakes after gym session or throughout the day, if so which shake is the best? If not then what could help me to get bigger without supplements. I have diet advice etc but i want my gym sessions to be more effective and to come back in the new year, looking bigger and stronger to help with my rugby!
