Hi,
I am emailing for a small bit of career advice and would be very grateful if you could spare a second of your time to answer a query I have. I am currently pursuing a career in Sports Science, having completed a BSc Psychology, Sport and Exercise degree and a Masters degree in Sports Science I am at present trying to gain further qualifications and work experience. I have a large interest in Sports Nutrition and consider myself to have a reasonable knowledge of the area as I read around books and publications, however during my degrees I have only completed select sports nutrition modules at undergraduate level. Although I feel I have a reasonable practical knowledge and would like to pursue the area as a career option in the future, I think I may be necessary to gain some extra qualifications in the area. I have seen many Level 3 Diploma or Level 3 NCFE Award certificate in Sports Nutrition courses that would allow me to gain further qualifications at the same time as working or completing more work experience. However, I am not sure of the merits of these courses and how they are looked on in the profession. If possible could you advise me on if in your opinion these courses would be of value to me and if they are worth completing or not.
I would appreciate any advice you could provide,
Regards,
Mark

Hey Mark,
I would contact the BANT – and the Nutrition therapy council – it depends a bit on whether you want to just be a sports nutritionist or if you want to be a clinical nutritionist dealing with other health issues and joe public.
You’ll need professional insurance which ever way you go – you can get this as a PT or S & C guy and get nutrition as part of your cover – or you can train up clinically – but it’ll be alot more studying.
The bodies above have lists of approved courses, i’d stick to one of them if I were you.
Also there’s a olympic certification in sports nutrition which is remote and very good
Good luck mate.

Hi Matt
My name is Ben Aston; I am a trainee journalist currently studying at Bournemouth University.
For my final year I have to write a series of feature pieces on topics in the public interest.
I am writing one feature in the style of FHM, it looks into the relationship that men have with food and how this compares to a woman's relationship with food.
It will be a light hearted piece with an aim to entertain the reader but also to inform them on male food habits and how to act on these in order to maintain a healthy diet and physique.
As a sports nutritionist to professional footballers I feel your input in the piece would be invaluable.
Would you be up for a quick telephone/email interview on this topic?
I am not looking to publish the feature, it is purely for educational purposes.
Thank you so much for reading this email and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Kind Regards,
Ben Aston

Hi Matt
I am employed as a sport scientist/ nutritionist at a football academy in the north west. We have a major problem in trying to boost our lads immune system through trying to offer them as much fruit and vegetables at meal times to boost their RDA’s. The players themselves will not touch their fruit and vegetables and after I spoke to a friend of mine who works at another football club, he suggested that football players should have 6-9 portions of fruit and veg per day? In what ways can I boost our players to increase their intake of fruit and veg, to enable them to boost their immune system along with other aspects of their health?

hi mate, thanks for getting in touch.
I advocate 12 servings per day! – as a serving is only 80grams it’s not too tricky to get there.
ways to do this are, soups, sauces (sneak extras into bolognaise and the like) spices, herbs (which have high flavanoid / polyphenol content)
Green drinks – added to protein shakes – and then the supplements
glutamine, vitamin C, D – colostrum – a strong multi vitamin
proper recovery protocols following training sessions, hygeine
there’s a decent immune resource on the site which covers all this plus a pod cast if you are interested.

Hi Matt,
I recently purchased the match day e-book however there have been no links provided for me to download it. I attempted to go onto the perform and function website and it said it was temporarily down. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Matt,
I’ve read some of the comments and help you have given here and it’s very encouraging, so I thought I’d ask for some advice too!
I’ve just completed a BSc in Nutrition, Exercise and Heath and have already begun my PGc in Sports and Exercise nutrition at Coventry university. I am reps level 3 qualified as a personal trainer, level 2 gym and studio instructor, and frankly I don’t know where to go next! I currently work as a personal trainer, but I am looking to put my sports nutrition experience into practise as well as my exercise coaching and knowledge. I have been at a sports and nutrition conference this week at Surrey sports park, which, by the way is a credit to the sporting industry and others have suggested finding an specific area to go into, but I just can’t pin point what I’d like to do with all these qualifications. Are you able to offer any advice or help on this?
I would be very interested in doing some voluntary work with you if you needed some help and/ or had the time.
Thanking you in advance
Nathan

Yes thanks it came through in the end, I was unaware that it came through via e-mail.
The document has been extremely helpful already!!
Are there anymore documents specifically related to speed based players?
Thanks,
Lewis

for sure – what’s your sport – is it football?
you might do well on the regenerate system – if you need more lean power or the fat loss system if you are carrying too much deadweight.
November 3rd, 2011 at 9:41 am
yes, football I’m a striker and a lot of my play involves around explosive speed. Can the match day nutrition book be applied the same to a player of my position or is there something more tailored to a speed based player that you can offer?
Thanks
Lewis
November 3rd, 2011 at 12:27 pm
depends. It can be applied to any position in football you just need to alter your intake and supplements to suit your position and km covered in matches.
if oyu need to lose some fat then the http://www.fourweekfatloss.com system would work but you’ll need to keep more carbs in around your training sessions – double what this guide recommends – if you are already lean then more exploisive power will help so a more regenerative system like the regenerate – will help you in this regard.
