One door closes another opens…

matt-england-portraitMy time working with the England Rugby Team is coming to an end.

I’ve had an amazing 13 years and got to work with and become friends with some icons of English Sport, Sir Clive Woodward, Jonny Wilkinson, Martin Johnson to name a few as well as hundreds of players and support staff.

In modern International sport it’s taken as read that your position is temporary and often a new coach wants a new team in place.

I’ve been fortunate to have worked with 5 different England Head coaches from Sir Clive to Stuart Lancaster, looking back I’m proud of my longevity.  The highlights were the 2003 World Cup Final and being in the camp for the entire 2007 campaign where against the odds we got to the World Cup Final.

What a lot of fans maybe don’t realise is that the support staff feel the ups and downs of the roller coaster ride as much as the players do, I was never good enough to play sport at the top level but working with the national team gave me immense pride as if I was on the pitch myself.

I’ve met some very clever people during my time working with the RFU and I’ll be looking to further develop those relationships over the coming years as I look to grow and improve the nutritional support that I give the Premier League Football teams that I’m currently involved with. With the emergence of the Tier 2 nations at the recent RWC and the global growth expected for Rugby 7’s after the Rio Olympics the future looks bright.

One of my philosophies is that when you are working at the sharp end you need to come up with new ideas using your creativity, developing new protocols to get that edge. This is part of my DNA and won’t ever change.

All the top teams know what’s already published in the scientific literature and should already be doing it. To be at the ‘pinnacle’ you’ve got to be that little bit different to get the ultimate success and be looking at ideas that will make the literature in 10 years time.

I wish the team all the success under the new coaching team.

  1. On behalf of those of us who have enjoyed the success of England Rugby, a huge thank you. Good luck in your next endeavour.

  2. Matt,

It’s remarkable that you have worked for so long with the changing coaches and performance teams at England RFU. My corporate clients continue to benefit from your experience and insight but, perhaps, above else your commitment to their own goals and wellbeing. It’s this authenticity more than anything that motivates people to make those important changes to their beliefs, goals, decisions and behaviours. Looking forward to breaking more new ground with you and Gav in 2016
